Photo rejected by the exam portal? Here is how to fix it

Photo rejected on an SSC, IBPS, RRB, UPSC or NTA portal? These are the common reasons and how to fix each one in under a minute.

Why it happens

Exam portals reject photos for a few predictable reasons: a file size outside the KB range, wrong pixel dimensions, a background that is not plain and light, or missing details such as your name and the date on the photo. Find the reason that applies and fix just that.

How to fix it

  1. Read the portal’s error. It usually says the file is too large, too small or the wrong size.
  2. Open your exam on this site. It applies the correct dimensions and KB range, and Check photo points out other problems.
  3. If your exam is not listed, use Resize photo with the values from the official notification.

Questions

Why does the portal say my photo format is invalid?

Most portals accept JPEG only, not PNG, WebP or HEIC. Every tool here saves JPEG, so resizing your photo also fixes the format.

The portal says "file too large". What should I do?

Use Compress with a limit just below the portal’s maximum, for example 48 KB for a 50 KB limit, and upload the new file.

My photo is the right size but still rejected. Why?

Look for a background that is not plain and light, a face that is not clearly visible, glasses or a cap, or a missing name and date on the photo, which some exams such as APPSC, HSSC ask for.

Is there one photo that works for every exam?

No. Most exams in our list use 276×354 px, but others differ (for example Agniveer (354×472 px), CEED (200×230 px), CLAT (200×230 px)) and KB limits vary too. Use your exam’s exact values.
